What is Norwich Living History Group?

Norwich Living History Group is a non-profit-making organisation formed by a group of people with an interest in reminiscence and oral history. Central to our ethos is the belief that as well as providing excellent educational material, listening to and making a written record of people’s memories shows them how valued they are as members of our society and citizens of our city.

Reminiscence and life story work are used with people of all ages and backgrounds as a way of stimulating and valuing the memories of all citizens of the city who wish to take part. Opportunities for oral history training are provided to volunteers with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. Skills gained and practiced within the project place out-of-work volunteers in a better position to seek employment, confident in their new communication and interviewing skills. NLHG is open to recruiting volunteers from all backgrounds. The nature of the work means that there is flexibility in terms of how many interviews are carried out and when. Consequently, volunteering with NLHG is viable for people with a range of commitments.

As the database of recorded memories grows, these will be published in a series of themed books with accompanying audio-CDs containing original recordings from interviews carried out by the project’s volunteers. It is hoped that this format for a history of the city will make it accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, thus widening the audience for learning about the past.

Norwich Living History Group works closely with the Archive Centre at the Norfolk Record Office. It is envisaged that opportunities for learning and training will be self-perpetuating, with more people becoming interested and involved in the history of Norwich as the material gathered enters the public arena over the next few years. It is in the nature of reminiscence work that as one person recounts their memories, so others begin to recall long-forgotten events and experiences.
